Function of Fill Media in Cooling Tower

Fill media is an important part of Cooling Tower. Or say, you cannot design cooling tower without this very part. Ask why??

Fill media allows easy transfer of heat just by maximizing the contact between water and air. The hot water inside the tower is distributed above fill media and cooling take place through evaporation. Today, HVAC industry offers towers made up of plastic or wood fills. Be sure that fill media has great impact on energy consumption. Generally energy is consumed in two different ways-

  • Electric energy is used for pumping above the fill and fans to create the air drift. Therefore, an efficiently designed fill media will consume less electricity.
  • Fill media determines the surface area of heat exchange, duration of heat exchange, turbulence in water effecting thoroughness of intermixing and so on. Engineers say, the greater the heat exchange take place, the more effective is the cooling tower mechanism.

I like how the blog explains fill media and cool towers in a simple way that people can understand. I liked the bullet points and the picture. That really illustrated what the article was about. http://www.coolingtower.com.au/easyweb3/WEBID-157951-ep_code-spare_parts.html
